Genealogy of the Bible

Various genealogies from one master database.

About this database

I created this database because I could find nothing like it on the Internet when I searched in Dec 2003. This task has become manageable in recent years due to the proliferation of genealogical software and the standardization of data exchange through GEDCOM files. This allows anyone to share the same database. This page was generated using the Latter Day Saint (Mormon) software program called Personal Ancestry File (PAF) which I used because it was free. There are other free programs out there that may be as good. This is not a recommendation for the LDS software or especially for the LDS church.

What I really would like is a complete database of every name in the Bible with the genealogy as stated.

The assumption is made that the Bible can be read like a modern historical document or genealogy. At points this is clearly not the case. For example, there are many places in the Bible which refer to a person as the son of another person when in fact another genealogy shows that the person is the grandson, not the son. Also, there are differences between the Septuagint (LXX) and Masoretic Text (MT) of the Hebrew Bible. These are included as notes wherever possible or practical.

It is incomplete. It is also based on assumptions at points were the text is not obvious or clear. The genealogy of Luke is included as well as the genealogy of Genesis. Part of 1 Chronicles and Ruth are also included.

The King James Version was used as it is widely available and commonly accepted. I have tried to include in the notes at least some of the major references in the family trees (the begats).
