Monkeys and the 23rd Psalm

by webmaster@douglasgilliland.com

The question is "Could a monkey, given enough time, type the 23rd Psalm?"

Ignoring punctuation and verse numbers, there are 23 letters (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, w, y, and space). There are no (j, q, x, z).

There are about 800 letters and characters in the passage. The chance that a single money could type the passage would then be about:

one in (23 to the 800th power)

If the monkey typed 24 hours per day for 15 billion years, at ten letters per second, this totals about 5 times 10 ^ 18. Let's round this up to 10^19. Note that this is far short of the 23^800 seconds that are required.

Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

If you think this is a wierd subject, consider the possibility of organic evolution. Either way, I got you read the 23rd Psalm.
