I used to think that Jesus was in favor of self defense using deadly weapons under certain conditions
Luke 22:36 Then said he [Jesus] unto them [His disciples], But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
But how does this relate to “Turn the other cheek”?
These verses speak against the idea that it was self-defense:
Matthew 26:50-52
And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Blessed Theophylact had helpful things to say about this.
