Zion as a Historic Location
2 Samuel 5:7
Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David).
1 Kings 8:1
Now Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the City of David, which is Zion.
1 Chronicles 11:5
But the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not come in here!” Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David).
Zion, the Messianic Promise
Psa 50:2
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God will shine forth.
Psa 102:16
For the LORD shall build up Zion; He shall appear in His glory.
Isaiah 2:3
Many people shall come and say,
“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
To the house of the God of Jacob;
He will teach us His ways,
And we shall walk in His paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Zechariah 8:3
“Thus says the LORD:
‘I will return to Zion,
And dwell in the midst of Jerusalem.
Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth,
The Mountain of the LORD of hosts,
The Holy Mountain.’
Zechariah 9:9
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.
Isa 28:16
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:
Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation,
A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
Whoever believes will not act hastily.
Fulfilled in Christ
Mat 21:5
“Tell the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your King is coming to you,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”
Jhn 12:15
“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
Rom 9:33
As it is written:
“Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense,
And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Rom 11:26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;

The Orthodox Church is Zion
The liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church leans heavily on the Psalms for the Church and see herself as Zion.
