Protestants often miss the verses which show the Apostles appointing Bishops to oversee the Churches that they founded. It’s in a few scattered verses (and implied in many others).
Titus 1:5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee…
Act 14:23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.
Act 20:17 And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church….
28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
The next generations replaced the bishops using the same pattern the Apostles used – all the way down to today. We call it apostolic succession.
