MARK 8:30-34
At that time, Jesus charged his disciples to tell no one about him, that he is the Christ. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men.” And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Secret Teaching – Later Revealed
Christ predicted He would be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes.
Christ was handed over to the Romans for execution. The Jews were under Roman occupation and didn’t have the authority to put a man to death.
Jesus predicted HIs resurrection and it happened.
Peter’s Words
Peter, likely out of sentiment, didn’t want to hear that Jesus was going to be killed. Certainly, he got stuck on the killing part. It would have shocked him. But Peter missed the resurrection part.
Take up Your Cross
Jesus told them that they were going to face the same things He did. A servant is no greater than his Master. If Jesus, the Master, suffered to the point of death, then they would face the same thing.
The same applies to us today. We are told that we must pick up our crosses.
