{"id":1818,"date":"2026-08-15T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T12:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/douglasgilliland.com\/theology\/?p=1818"},"modified":"2026-08-15T12:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T12:00:11","slug":"prayer-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/douglasgilliland.com\/theology\/2026\/08\/15\/prayer-hours\/","title":{"rendered":"Prayer Hours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sources such as the Didache, Tertullian, Cyprian, Clement of Alexandria, and the Apostolic Tradition (attributed to Hippolytus) show that all Christians were encouraged to pray at set times:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Lord\u2019s Prayer three times a day. &#8211; Prayer specifically at the third, sixth, and ninth hours of daylight (roughly 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p.m.\u2014later called Terce, Sext, and None)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These were linked to events of Christ\u2019s Passion and to apostolic practice (Acts 2:15, 3:1, 10:9).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional prayers in the morning (upon rising) and evening (at sunset or before sleep), and sometimes at midnight.
