<\/span>Rom 8:26-39<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as it is written,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG;<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God…<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>“God causes<\/b>” – in spite of the badness of the thing at hand, God is greater and is able to transform that thing into something greater<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>There is a redemptive purpose in suffering.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>This is a hard message for those who were abused as children<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Abuse has no excuse and God is not for the abuse<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Yet, we have to say that God is presently turning such things into good <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>How could God possibly use such an evil thing as abuse of children for His good?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Such a God seems sadistic to allow it in the first place.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Our sight is often too short and focused on our immediate pain<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>It is interesting that a larger percentage of the population than average of people who have been abused as children end up themselves in in helping professions (Medical, etc).<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Robert Schuller has a famous quotation has some validity on this point<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

v29 – Foreknowledge, Predestination, conformation to the image of the Son<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Our past, present and future all belong to God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.”<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Psalm is a people faithful to God and yet suffering troubles<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>This needs to be explained to the church since the normal situation in the Old Testament –<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Suffering was a consequence of <\/span><\/b>Israel<\/span><\/b><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> abandoning God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Israel<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> was not suffering for abandoning God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Israel<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> was suffering for being faithful to God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>There is a similar example from <\/span>Israel<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region>‘s history that comes to mind.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>At the time of Elijah there were seven thousand who had not bowed their knee to Baal (1Ki_19:18<\/u>) out of a much larger sized nation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Like Elijah, perhaps many of them were hiding.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>The example of Elijah is where Paul takes his idea of a saved remnant from <\/span>Israel<\/span><\/st1:place><\/st1:country-region> which will figure later (Rom_11:4<\/u>).<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>This sets an O. T. precedence for suffering that Paul will show.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Paul is answering the “Where is it written?<\/i>” question for his own generation.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>The church is not suffering for abandoning God, but for holding to God.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>The time of David doesn’t seem to be a good fit since David had military domination over his enemies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>K&D commentary on Psalm 44, p 65:<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>“…the events of the Syrio-Ammonite war. … conflict with the foes of the kingdom in the south, viz, with the Edomites, was also mixed up with the wars with the Ammonites and their Syrian allies at that period… 2Sa_8:13<\/u> and 1Ki_11:15<\/u>“<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>It is hard to see how this fits the passage.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7 <\/span><\/span><\/span>pp 66-67 – this “takes a unique position in the range of Old Testament literature side by side with Lam 3 and the Deutero-Isaiah. … resembles the affliction of Job. Psa_60:4<\/u> [is similar]”<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

v37 – <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7<\/span><\/span>There is no denial in Scripture that we go through troubles as Christians.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
